The Metropolitan University of Hong Kong is a statutory university located in Ho Man Tin, Kowloon, Hong Kong. Its main campus consists of five colleges, namely the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Lee Shau Kee School of Business Management, the Faculty of Science and Technology, the Faculty of Nursing and Health, and the Faculty of Education and Language. It has also established the Open University of Hong Kong Press to handle publishing affairs.
Established by the British Hong Kong government in 1989, with the educational spirit of "no discrimination in education" and "lenient admission and strict exit", the academic qualifications of associate degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctoral degrees conferred by universities are recognized by the Hong Kong SAR government. Part of the degree courses recognized as majoring in Chinese can receive funding through the Language Professional Development Award Subsidy Scheme of the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research in Hong Kong. The university is the largest self financing institution in Hong Kong, with over 120000 graduates. In terms of the number of full-time students, Douda ranks sixth among local universities.
Du University is the only self financing university founded by the Hong Kong government and the only self financing university in the area with self accreditation qualifications. At the beginning of its establishment, it was a college based on distance learning, and now it can be said that two universities have merged into one, operating with diverse modes of education.
In order to cope with the rapid development of the university, the university has carried out multiple large-scale campus expansion projects over the years. In 1996, the university relocated to its current location in Ho Man Tin and established its first off campus teaching center, the Hong Kong Island Teaching Center, at the Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan in 2000, serving as the headquarters of the Li Ka shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education. The Jockey Club campus of the university was officially opened in 2014 as an operational base for creative arts, testing and certification, as well as nursing and health-related courses. The new school building not only provides more spacious space for the increasing number of students, but also equips the curriculum with advanced teaching facilities.
